Consonant, sub consonant,
and words
In Khmer, the consonants ក to អ can combine with sub consonants (ជើងព្យញ្ជនៈ) to form consonant clusters (ព្យញ្ជនៈផ្សំ).
These clusters are an important feature of Khmer spelling because they allow
the language to represent more complex sounds and syllable structures.
Why are consonant clusters
important?
Learning consonant clusters
helps you:
- Read Khmer words accurately, especially words
that contain subscript consonants.
- Pronounce words more naturally, since the
consonants in a cluster are pronounced together as a single unit.
- Improve your spelling, because many Khmer words
contain consonant clusters. These clusters may appear at the beginning or
in the middle of a word.
- Expand your vocabulary, especially when
learning formal, literary, and religious Khmer.
- Understand words borrowed from Sanskrit and
Pali, as many of these words contain consonant clusters.
Example:
១. ក្ក កក្កដា សក្ការ តុក្កតា
២. ខ្ញ ខ្ញុំ ខ្ញី ខ្ញាំ
៣. គ្រ គ្រប គ្រប់គ្រង គ្រួសារ
៤. ឃ្ម ឃ្មុំ ឃ្មឹក ឃ្មោះ
៥. ង្វ សង្វាត ពង្វាង រង្វង់
