ស្រៈនៃភាសាខ្មែរ Khmer vowels
In Khmer orthography, vowels are represented by dependent vowel that attach to a base consonant and may be written before, above, below, or after it, or as a combination of these positions. These vowel signs function as syllabic nuclei and do not occur independently of a consonant base.
The Khmer
vowel inventory consists of 24 vowels. However, because each consonant letter
inherently contains an inherent vowel /ɑː/
(traditionally transcribed as aa), only 23 overt vowel symbols are
represented in the table below.
Khmer
consonants are divided into two phonological series (commonly termed Series OR
and Series O), reflecting a historical register contrast that conditions
vowel realization. The phonetic realization of a dependent vowel is determined
by the consonant series with which it is associated.
In
polysyllabic words, the consonant series of the initial syllable establishes
the phonological pattern for the word. If the onset consonant of the first
syllable belongs to Series OR, the accompanying vowel is realized according to
the Series OR pattern, and subsequent syllables typically conform to the same
series alignment. Conversely, if the onset consonant of the first syllable
belongs to Series O, the vowel follows the Series O realization, and following
syllables maintain this same series pattern.
